spacer spacer spacer How would you describe your background and experience, as it relates to the medical industry?

I have an undergraduate degree in Biology and a Masters of Science in Foods, Nutrition, and Exercise from Virginia Tech. I am a registered Medical Technologist, ASCP and a Registered Dietitian with a certification in Adult Weight Management. I have extensive training in CLIA, OSHA and Performance Improvement compliance issues in a primary care setting.

What are some of the specific ways in which you’ve been able to effect a change in communities?

I have worked with many communities and organizations in both rural and urban settings, successfully developing programs that have had a dramatic impact on quality of life. Since 2006, I have written over $6.5 million in grant awards (and counting) from the Health Resources and Services Administration Bureau, Community Development Block Grants, the Virginia Health Care Foundation, and other foundations and agencies.

In rural Craig County, nestled in the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia, there was no regular health care. Residents often had to drive 30 miles over mountainous terrain to get to a doctor. As a Project Manager and Grant Writer, I worked with the community to identify and secure funds and create a service delivery plan. This brought both a thriving federally qualified health center to the area, and a new building to house it!

In Roanoke, Virginia, there is a critical need for affordable dental services for uninsured and low-income adults. Through the Roanoke Mission of Mercy Project, I have worked with safety net providers and community leaders to bring an annual dental free clinic to the region. In its first two years, it has served over 2000 individuals and provided over $1 million worth of free care.

Coalition building and maximizing resources are key determinants in effecting change in communities. As the Facilitator for the Appalachian Rural Health Research Initiative sponsored by the National Organization for State Offices of Rural Health, I worked with the five State Offices of Rural Health and Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine located in the “Appalachia” region to create a strategic plan that fosters collaborative efforts for regional research initiatives focused on Appalachia.

In addition to working with communities, I have developed performance improvement plans, clinical guidelines, and capacity development programs for health care facilities that ensure optimal care is delivered to their clients.
